Kingdom
Kingdom
In 1920 Srikakulam, a group of tribals along with their king, try to stop the massacre of their people by the British, for mining gold. However, they are unsuccessful in doing so and their king dies without telling the survivors of the massacre about a prophesied descendant of their tribe. In 1991, Constable Byreddy Surya "Suri", a young and aggressive, but well-mannered police officer who, after being separated from his elder brother, Siva, during their childhood for killing their abusive father, is recruited by a RAW handler, Jayaprakash 'JP', to go on an undercover mission. His objective is to infiltrate the heavily fortified island off of Sri Lanka, known as "Divi", in the midst of the Sri Lankan civil war and obtain details about a huge consignment of arms and gold coming from Hong Kong, just a few months after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. However, Divi is ruled with an iron fist by Odiyappan, who is part of the Sri Lankan cartel and comes from a Tamil-speaking family. Suri is shocked to know that his long-lost brother, Siva, is the leader of the descendants of the tribe from 1920 who have relocated to Divi to escape from the British. He begins his mission by instigating a brawl during a temple festival and getting himself arrested and sent to Jaffna prison, a place notorious for its brutal and lawless conditions. Upon his arrival, the two brothers, now on opposite sides of a brewing conflict, are reunited under tense and dangerous circumstances.

It’s not that Kingdom is a bad film, but the film never soars or lives upto the true potential of its themes. Gowtam’s previous work Jersey was as simplistic and straightforward a story as they get, riding entirely on its emotional weight. On the other hand, Kingdom has too many things on its platter, and ends up doing a disservice to most of them. But Kingdom’s ambitions go far beyond its action pieces or world-building. The film rests on the relationship between Siva and Soori, and how it evolves once they reunite under different circumstances. However, the film never makes peace with its core premise. You can see Gowtam Tinnanuri wants to make a grand epic that almost has a mythical quality. At the same time, embedded in the story is this inherent need to drive on emotional beats, which this film struggles to do.Read at source
Vijay Deverakonda steps away from his romantic hero image in Kingdom, taking on the role of a hot-headed constable in a bold attempt at reinvention. He transforms physically—sporting a shaved head—and delivers a restrained performance. However, even his committed portrayal can’t salvage a film bogged down by an implausible plot and scattered execution. Set against the backdrop of Telugu tribals turned fishermen being enslaved on a remote Sri Lankan island, the story stretches credibility at every turn. Vijay’s undercover mission to outwit the Sri Lankan army and retrieve hidden gold feels detached from reality. The idea of a few smugglers taking on military force on foreign soil is hard to digest and weakens the film’s dramatic stakes and heroism goes for a toss.Read at source
Much like Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD (2024), Kingdom boasts an originality that is now rare to find in big-ticket adventures. What also connects the two films is the lack of intimacy in their storytelling. In Kingdom’s case, the opportunity to craft a profound tale is squandered as it fails to fully engage with real-world politics (in fact, it paints a murkier picture of the human subjugations seen today or in past), or explore the aspect of human desire and morality; an epic isn’t just a spectacle after all, but also a document of what it is to be human. Gowtam Tinnanuri’s film gestures at those explorations, but it doesn’t commit to them, coming across as though it is unsure of the audience’s intelligence. The result is a film with a beating heart, but still emotionally distant.Read at source
