Set in the 19th century under the British Raj, Ranabaali highlights the economic exploitation and severe artificial droughts inflicted upon rural communities under colonial administrators like Sir Richard Temple. Amidst severe famine in a land designated as "cursed," a localized resistance leader named Ranabaali (Vijay Deverakonda) emerges to counter the British imperial policies and military actions spearheaded by the regional administrator, Sir Theodore Hector (Arnold Vosloo). According to the production crew, the narrative functions as a cinematic reconstruction assembled from oral histories and suppressed records of events traditionally omitted or misrepresented in mainstream colonial historiography.
