It's not that Abhishek Bachchan does not do a good job, considering the limitations of the altered script. He works to bring a kind of baffled innocence to his face, and the slightly tragic air of a man, so weighed down by responsibilities that he never learnt how to really live. The joy on his face when a plate of Biryani is placed before him or when he meets a character from his past, indicates the actor's sincere investment in the role. Daivik Baghela plays Ballu with a winning zest, and mercifully keeps the precociousness in check. (With no cinema or television in sight, how does he know Amitabh Bachchan's dialogues and gestures from old films?) Kaalidhar Laapata is worth a watch, more so because clean family-viewing films are getting scarcer by the week.Read at source

By directing the Hindi version and co-writing the screenplay with Amitosh Nagpal, Madhumita stays in charge of the film’s emotional beats. The core relationship between two cast-aside souls who find that they have a lot in common was the chief draw of the original film and is the reason the Hindi retooling works too. The choice of a younger protagonist means that the adaptation needs to justify itself more vigorously. The exact nature of Kaalidhar’s ailment isn’t clear, not are his symptoms consistent with his behaviour. Subodh feels shoehorned into the story, rather than an important neutral witness to Kaalidhar’s journey. While Kaalidhar Laapata is sluggishly paced and doesn’t capture the sheer ordinariness of its anguished hero or his milieu, the remake does portray the ways in which love and empathy transcend familial ties.Read at source
Kaalidhar Laapata', directed by Madhumita and led by Abhishek Bachchan, is the Hindi remake of her own Tamil film, 'KD A Karuppu Durai'. While the core storyline remains intact, the Hindi version has its own flavour. The film shines in its heartfelt portrayal of an unlikely bond between a forgotten man and a spirited child. However, it falters in places. Some scenes lack emotional depth and the pacing isn’t always steady. But even with these flaws, 'Kaalidhar Laapata' manages to strike a chord, thanks largely to its honest and affecting performances.Read at source
The intent is heartfelt, but the impact doesn’t always land as deeply as it should. 'Kaalidhar Laapata' is a film that means well, and thanks to Abhishek Bachchan’s moving performance and his chemistry with Daivik Baghela, it occasionally soars. But in trying to tick every emotional box, it loses some of its authenticity along the way. Still, beneath the slightly formulaic structure lies a tender story about forgotten people, unexpected friendships, and the fragile dignity of those simply trying to be seen. It's not perfect, but it’s a reminder that even in a world quick to discard the vulnerable, moments of connection can still shine through.Read at source
