Biplab Goswami's story is unconventional and amusing. Sneha Desai's screenplay adds to the entertainment quotient. At the same time, it also raises some important points. Sneha Desai's dialogues (additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma) are funny and also quite sharp and hit the right chord. Kiran Rao's direction is uncomplicated and captivating. The narrative is easy to understand while the characters are straight out of life. The humour is infused in an organic manner; not a single dialogue or punch seems forced. The story could have seemed unconvincing or flawed but Kiran makes sure that it looks believable why the bride got lost and why she was not able to reunite with her hubby. As the story progresses, Kiran touches upon certain social aspects plaguing society. Yet again, it seamlessly becomes a part of the goings-on. The character of Manju Maai is a masterstroke in this regard.Read at source

Laapataa Ladies
In 2001, within the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh, a young farmer named Deepak travels back to his village with his new bride, Phool Kumari. They board a heavily congested overnight passenger train alongside several other newlywed couples. Adhering to regional tradition, all the brides wear identical red bridal attire with their faces entirely concealed by a ghoonghat (veil). Deepak dozes off during the journey and wakes up abruptly at night, realizing the train has reached his station. In the ensuing rush and darkness, he accidentally disembarks with the wrong bride, leaving Phool behind on the train with another groom, Pradeep. Deepak's family gathers to welcome the couple, only to discover the mistake once the bride lifts her veil. Unwilling to reveal her true identity, the woman gives the family a false name, Pushpa, and lies about her hometown. Meanwhile, at a distant railway station, Phool realizes the mix-up. However, because she does not know the name of Deepak's village or his phone number, the station master cannot assist her. Refusing to return to her own village out of fear of bringing social shame upon her family, Phool decides to remain at the platform in hopes that Deepak will return for her. She receives shelter and employment from Manju Mai, an independent woman who runs a tea stall on the platform. A frantic Deepak files a missing person report with Sub-Inspector Shyam Manohar.

Laapataa Ladies is a poignant yet heartwarming tale of independence and self-reliance that will make you smile, laugh and ponder. The satire addresses societal evils on the chin but continues to remain entertaining and enchanting through its course of 2 hours and 5 minutes. Kiran Rao deftly and sensitively handles the subject matter. She never lets the film feel preachy or a deliberate attempt at proving a point. She is able to extract extraordinary performances out of her marvellous actors. Everything from editing to songs, background music and cinematography is first rate and the result is a flawless film. There's a lot more to say about the movie but that would also mean giving out a lot of spoilers. So, it is best to just watch the film without any preconceived notions. There's nothing about Laapataa Ladies that doesn't work.Read at source
