Meiyazhagan

Premkumar gets a lot of things right in Meiyazhagan, especially the setting of the film, the flow of the narrative, and most importantly, the casting. Veteran actors like Rajkiran and Ilavarasu might just be appearing in a few scenes, but they exude a lived-in sense of warmth. The same holds good for Devadarshini, Karunakaran, Jayaprakash, and Raichal Rebecca, whose sheer presence adds a lot of weight to wonderful characters that say a lot without saying much. Apart from Karthi and Arvind Swamy, Meiyazhagan offers Saran Sakthi and Sri Divya the chance to reiterate to the discerning audience that they are compelling talents, and both these actors lap it all up.

Meiyazhagan's first half will keep you hooked to the seats, but it is the second half that meanders. The major conflict in the film is so simple, that it feels tedious after a point in the second half. The two characters talk about Jallikattu, the Sterlite incident and the Sri Lankan Civil War. While these topics truly expose Karthi's large heart, it also makes you empathise with him as everything affects them. However, they also (sort of) bring down the high that the first half created.Â

At the outset, Meiyazhagan is not your regular commercial fare and is a well-crafted emotional life story that slowly unfolds over 178 minutes. Karthi and Arvind Swami share fantastic chemistry on screen and have delivered excellent performances as have the other cast members like Devadarshni, Rajkiran, Sri Divya, Karunakaran and Jayaprakash. Karthi truly lives the role of the innocent and highly extroverted village guy and we have seen him in similar roles in earlier films as well. Arvind Swami has matured more as an actor and this is reflected on screen as we see how effectively he exercises the extreme restraint and composure which are required for his role as Arul. Karthi is the perfect support to Arvind Swami in his journey of self-discovery.

Despite the potential for overblown melodrama inherent in the plot, in Meiyazhagan, Prem Kumar goes for a tone that's somewhere between melancholy and heartwarming.

Ultimately, Meiyazhagan is a sweet, sensitive film. It may not have the easy, emotional pull of 96, what with all the musical flourish, but that’s what makes it doubly special. It’s a story about stories, about forgotten memories and quiet reflections. For once, this isn’t a celebration of romantic love, but of something quieter and more enduring—male camaraderie, kinship, and a rare vulnerability that allows men to cry in the presence of other men. It’s a film about heritage, harmony and the importance of home. And as the film gently reminds us, home isn’t always a place—it could be anywhere your roots lead you. Sometimes, it’s as simple and profound as spending a night with someone and learning their name.
