Soorarai Pottru, which will go down as one of the best films of the year, is Suriya’s return to form (after a few mediocre films) and it’s quite gutsy of a mainstream hero to produce and star in a film that doesn’t tick all those boxes of a typical commercial entertainer.Read at source

Soorarai Pottru
Nedumaaran Rajangam, nicknamed "Maara," is a former Indian Air Force pilot officer who envisions launching a low-cost carrier airline. He idolizes industry tycoon Paresh Goswami, the elitist owner of Jaz Airlines. Maara’s personal life shifts when he meets Sundari "Bommi," a fiery young woman determined to establish her own bakery, whose family is seeking a marriage alliance. Maara is deeply impressed by her independent nature and agrees to the match. He confides in her about his youth, which is marked by a rebellious streak and a highly contentious relationship with his father. While serving in the Air Force, young Maara's insubordination frequently draws the ire of his superior, M. Naidu. The turning point in Maara's life occurs when his father is on his deathbed; lacking the funds to secure a last-minute plane ticket, Maara desperately pleads with airport passengers for financial aid, but is rejected. By the time he completes the arduous journey via road and rail, his father is already cremated. This trauma fuels Maara's ambition to make air travel affordable for lower-income groups. Though moved by his story, Bommi initially declines the marriage proposal, stating that they are both currently wedded to their respective career ambitions. Undeterred, Maara requests an ex-serviceman loan from Naidu, who flatly rejects him. Left with no alternative, he boards a flight carrying Paresh Goswami to pitch a partnership for a budget airline.

Well, it turns out that it can make for even better cinema than one may imagine. The abundant depth and entertainment on offer in Soorarai Pottru, I view as being a direct consequence of the unrelenting honesty of its writing and performances.Read at source
Inspired by the life events of Captain GR Gopinath, the man who revolutionised India’s aviation industry, Sudha Kongara has come up with a beautiful tale of hope and triumph. Every scene and every dialogue in the film reminds us that the sky is the limit and one shouldn't let go of his dreams easily. The director’s intention to deliver an inspiring tale is quite evident right from the word 'go’. After opening with one of the most terrific flying scenes, in which an aeroplane is saved by landing it in a military zone, Soorarai Pottru segues into a brave and gripping performance by Suriya - easily his career-best.Read at source
Soorarai Pottru largely works, as it is about a larger-than-life dream than one particular person. I’m not denying that it is based on GR Gopinath’s life, but the dramatic events that have carefully been picked from his tall tale are about a handful and director Sudha Kongara has glued them well with enough grit to sustain the proceedings.Read at source
