Unmadham

Kunchako Boban's mystery crime thriller, written by Shahi Kabir and directed by debutant Kiran Das, sets up a strong premise but gets lost in direction in all the chaos towards the end.

Editor-turned-filmmaker Kiran Das teams up with Kabir in a film that’s a shapeshifter in the genre. The mixing of crime with psychological and supernatural elements works wonders in certain portions. But it also comes across as convenient for the writer in some difficult phases. The central character being a scriptwriter gives the film the extra license to serve up elements of fantasy amid the actual police procedural, which comes across as a cop out at some points.

Even with Unmadham’s several shortcomings and the story’s similarity to a few old movies, the psychological drama impresses, thanks to the gripping way Shahi has developed the script.

But while we get a riveting first half, which explores these aspects, the second half gets a bit chaotic, but first time-director Kiran Das does a good job with weaving the narrative.
