The Night Manager

The Night Manager also witnesses a dip in pace in the third episode, slowly laying out all the cards.

This one is a bare bones version of the original, which works up to a point but without Le Carré's careful plotting with political details and nasty inter-agency rivalry in the UK, it is reduced to just another thriller about a man going undercover in a criminal network.

The series sadly does not reach its potential as the execution is middling, to say the least. The Night Manager opens with a well-shot fight scene, which tries to build an aura around Aditya's character. The show then moves at its own pace. The sequence depicting the death of an innocent character has also been executed well. It works mainly because of its haunting silences. The scene focusing on Shaan and Shelly's first meeting, too well as the silences again do the talking.

Like the always dapper Shelly, The Night Manager is well styled but insubstantial, at least in the episodes available for viewing. The constant thrum of danger in the British production, with the threat of discovery always imminent, has been replaced by a generalised will-he-get-away-with-it suspense. If Anil Kapoor’s Shelly has the suavity of a crooked entrepreneur rather than the killer instinct of a deathmonger, Aditya Roy Kapur parleys his pin-up status for a part that doesn’t ask too much of him. Sobhita Dhulipala brings vulnerability to her glamorised role, apart from adding a meta-touch by clutching a copy of Le Carré’s novel in a scene. The secondary players always have the better scenes. Some clever casting choices help ease high-stakes material that made perfect sense in a Western geopolitical context into Indian terrain.
