Sing Geetham

On the whole, “Sing Geetham” should not be judged through the lens of a regular commercial entertainer because it is anything but one. It is an ambitious experiment from a filmmaker who, even at 94, remains eager to explore new storytelling forms. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s passion for innovation shines throughout the film. Its environmental message and unique narrative approach make it noteworthy. It may not appeal to everyone, but those interested in seeing a different cinematic experiment will find enough to admire. It is an out of the box experience.

SingGeetham is one of the most unique attempts in recent Telugu cinema. It blends mystery, fantasy and a meaningful social message, with Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s signature touch all over it. The premise itself is refreshingly original. At a time when most of the filmmakers using social media and pop culture references to engage the audience, the idea of ‘conversations through songs’, felt very novel and refreshing. The legendary, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, deserves every bit of respect and appreciation for thinking of such an innovative idea. The biggest strength of the film is Devi Sri Prasad. From the songs and background score to the innovative dialogue-song format, DSP is the driving force behind the entire experience. It is not easy to make a film where a majority of the conversations happen through songs, but DSP’s work makes the experiment land more often than not.

Sing Geetham does not choose a lane. It is a fantasy, a musical, a mystery, a comedy, a drama, and an environmental fable, all rolled into one. Singeetham has spent a career juggling genres, and here he has attempted something more ambitious. He has tried to weave all of them into a single piece of cloth. What holds all those genres together is not plot or structure, it is compassion. The film’s real subject is what happens to a community when people stop genuinely caring about each other and the world around them, and what it costs them to find empathy again. That theme runs quietly beneath every tonal shift, whether the film is being funny, unsettling, tender, or mythological. This is a harder thing to pull off than it sounds. Sing Geetam largely manages it.
