Set during India's 1975 Emergency, when communication across the country is tightly restricted, a powerful politician secretly orders a wireless telephone from Germany so he can speak with close associates without the state tapping their conversations. When that deal goes wrong, the prototype — treated as India's first wireless phone — becomes both a symbol of hope and a catalyst for chaos, and government officials, criminals, and other factions are drawn into a high-stakes hunt for the device and the money behind the transaction. A court-martialled soldier, a science teacher who has been secretly recording conversations, a jailor ordered to recover a compromising tape, and a convict released to retrieve it become entangled as rival groups scramble to possess the phone.
