Cocktail 2

This is cynical, insecure, and desperate filmmaking at its best.

They practically set the screen on fire together.

Overall, perhaps the biggest issue with Cocktail 2 is that it constantly reminds you of a better film. The original Cocktail was messy too, but it had heart and characters you cared about. This spiritual successor has the gloss, the glamour, but not the emotional punch. Some drinks are best served once.

Visually, the film is stunning, and Sicily's gorgeous landscape is postcard-worthy.

On the whole, Cocktail 2 is a half-baked romantic drama that fails to capitalise on the goodwill of its predecessor. Despite its stylish visuals, picturesque locations, rich production values, and a handful of commendable performances, the film is let down by its lack of emotional depth and engaging storytelling. Fans expecting the magic of the original Cocktail are likely to be disappointed, as the weak conflict and inconsistent narrative prevent the audience from fully connecting with the characters and their relationships.

Homi Adajania's direction is supreme. He mounts the film on a grand scale and moreover, he treats the principal characters with aplomb. They look real and people will relate to them or would know somebody in their circle who's like Kunal, Diya or Ally. The film often goes in a zone which might come across as bizarre. But Homi treats it just right and hence, one flows along with the developments in the story. Any other writer or director would have preferred to add scenes of characters fighting or confronting each other. Homi avoids the path completely, adding quirk to such scenes, and it comes across as a breath of fresh air. At the same time, the film is not shallow and a few emotional scenes tug at the viewers' heartstrings.

The screenplay moves at a steady pace in the first half, ensuring the film never becomes boring despite its predictability.

What doesn't: The film struggles to maintain emotional depth and often settles for familiar tropes. Certain conflicts feel stretched, while some crucial moments lack the impact they deserve. A few subplots appear underdeveloped. Despite dealing with complicated relationships, the screenplay remains fairly safe and predictable. There are moments where the film hints at exploring deeper emotions, but it never fully commits to them. For a film that carries the weight of the Cocktail brand, the sequel misses the freshness and emotional resonance that made the original memorable.

As long as its purpose of throwing everyone on the dance floor as they flaunt their toned abs in fancy clothes is served, Cocktail 2 doesn't feel obliged to make any sense. And so parents, previously treated as dispensable by the makers and not spotted once in the two-and-a -half hours long movie, show up in the final 15 minutes to spew gyaan on relationships. None of it is taken seriously in a scenario where everyone spends their time doing shots or glancing at the camera in a movie length photo shoot. Of the three, Rashmika heaves and blows through a character that's so illogical it's almost pitiable.

Ultimately Cocktail 2 comes off a bit of a cocktail itself, swinging between style and substance . It is Shahid Kapoor who carries this film with a pleasing conviction I haven’t seen in a long time. And while I missed Deepika Padukone’s wild wounded-ness, Sanon isn’t half bad herself. But there’s no getting past the conservatism which comes wrapped in this pyaar ka punchnama: for all its modern vibe, it’s the guy who gets the last word, not the gals.
