Bengal 1947

Bengal 1947

Against the 1947 Partition of Bengal, London-educated Mohan, from a zamindar family, returns to India and, through a case of mistaken identity, ends up among a lower-caste community, where he begins teaching children. He falls for Shabri, a woman from that community, but class barriers and rising Hindu-Muslim tension stand in the way of their relationship as neighbouring lives are already being pulled into the unrest. The story follows how their romance, and the villages around them, are tested by the violence and political upheaval of Partition, and by the social rules that insist they should not be together at all.
