Synopsis

Thaai Kizhavi

Pavunuthaayi, an aged moneylender, lives in Kadupatti village, Madurai, along with her daughter Suruli and her grandson. She is feared by the fellow villagers and respected by her family. One day, she becomes ill and lies on her deathbed, while subconsciously making hand gestures repeatedly. The news reaches her three estranged sons – Uppiliyan, a sound technician in Karumathur; Vijayan, a stingy auto rickshaw driver in Chekkanurani; and Selvam, a flower seller in Usilampatti, who arrive at her home. As the village prepares for Pavunuthaayi's impending death, Gold Kumar, a jeweller, arrives and confides to her sons and Pennycuick, a middle-aged bachelor, about 160 sovereigns of gold jewellery. 2 Idly, Suruli's estranged husband, also arrives in Kadupatti. The brothers and 2 Idly have an eye on their share of Pavunuthaayi's wealth. The four men hire a sign language interpreter who translates most of Pavunuthaayi's hand gestures until she drops unconscious. Based on what he collected, the interpreter says there is something of high value, like cash or gold, in three places or three shares for each son, but Pavunuthaayi collapsed before she could convey where the stash is. He recommends she be hospitalized. The three brothers want Pavunuthaayi to be cured for the money, so they take her to a multispecialty hospital in downtown Madurai to cure her illness. The brothers cannot pay for the fees, so they send Pennycuick to pawn their wives' ornaments.

If Radikaa is the heart, and the world of Thaai Kizhavi is the soul, some of the greatest hits of Kamal Haasan are the chords that tug at the heartstrings of the soul. Sivakumar Murugesan’s usage of these songs and the hyper-localised characters adds so much sheen to the narrative that Thaai Kizhavi is on top gear right from the first frame. What really keeps the film ticking is giving each of the principal characters a great scene, and the dialogues that has such authenticity that even when the film ventures into preachy territory, we never flinch. Sivakumar isn’t interested in this kind of theatrics. However, it doesn’t stop him from giving his characters a monologue or two to establish the film's moral compass. Here, the melodrama works. This astute understanding of when to dial up the drama, when to dial up the fun, and when to dial them both down reflects a filmmaker with a firm grasp of his craft.
