However, while the series remains engaging, thanks to the two strong female characters, it becomes highly predictable as the story progresses. Technically as well, the series tries to be flashy in certain instances. In the first episode, when Kavya and Sameer are arguing about Reyansh's safety at home, unnecessary camera movements distract from the main point. As is the norm these days, Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke hints at unfinished action. If it comes back, it needs to amp up the seriousness and tension of the matter to hold viewers attention for a second round.

Autograph, Shahjahan Regency, Vinci Da, Sherdil, Ray... filmmaker Srijit Mukherji has given us all such novel stuff in the past. However, Regina Cassandra-starrer Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke seems to be a mistake on his part. The 8-episode action drama series, that also stars Mita Vashisht, Barun Sobti and Jihan Hodar, has released on Zee5. We have often seen several web series toying with stories of cops and terrorism. There is an RDX, political leaders getting assassinated in bomb blasts, hard-working cops using their fists and brains to nab the accused. And honestly, this is becoming quite boring now!

Srijit Mukherji’s Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke on ZEE5 is a classic example of trying to sell old wine in a new bottle, only that this concoction never ages well. And coming from Mukherji – who gave us some interesting and novel stuff such Autograph, Shahjahan Regency and Vinci Da – I feel utterly disappointed.

The show is an earnest but mostly dull police procedural that shows in great detail how the cops find clues, chase suspects and protect the country. The men and women, who selflessly do these dangerous jobs, are not Bond-like glamorous heroes but ordinary-looking people, like the Internet expert Chandan Jha (Panchayat's Chandan Roy), the serious, bespectacled guy, who speaks chaste Hindi with a Bihari accent. Kavya is admired by the media that calls her 'Shillong Ki Sherni;, but also castigated when things go wrong. On the trail of the terrorists, she is shot at, wounded with explosives, and gets into fist fights, but she is relentless. The series ends up in Kochi, where another big attack has been planned, and the pace picks up somewhat.
