Synopsis

Ek Chatur Naar

Mamta Mishra (Divya Khosla Kumar) is a widow living in poverty with her young son Sonu and her mother-in-law. She is constantly hiding from Thakur’s debt collectors—her late husband owed them money she still cannot repay. Abhishek Verma (Neil Nitin Mukesh), a government contractor, is extremely wealthy thanks to the money he and his political allies—including Minister Qureshi (Zakir Hussain)—have stolen from the government and the public. One day, on his way to an important meeting with Qureshi, Abhishek’s car is involved in an accident. To reach the meeting on time, he decides to take the metro. At the station, his phone is stolen. Mamta, who works as a staff member at the metro station, sees this on CCTV and rushes out to chase the thief, but returns empty-handed. It is then revealed that Mamta had secretly conspired with the thief. She had asked him to steal a phone so she could gift it to her son for his birthday—something she could not afford. Meanwhile, Abhishek panics, realizing the stolen phone contains confidential information about his corrupt dealings and his affair with his secretary Tina Gupta (Heli Daruwala). He asks his policeman friend Triloki (Sushant Singh) to urgently recover the phone. Triloki begins the investigation. At home, Mamta discovers the incriminating data on the phone—videos, messages, proof of corruption, and evidence of Abhishek’s affair. She changes her plan and contacts Abhishek, demanding Rs 2 crore in ransom. Abhishek refuses.

What follows is an escalating cat-and-mouse chase, riddled with clever plot twists and revelations. Director Umesh Shukla, known for OMG – Oh My God! , has immersed himself in the texture of small-town India, presenting a world where neither the villains are cartoonishly evil, nor the heroine a flawless crusader. Instead, the film thrives on its steady, layered storytelling. Divya Khosla Kumar shines in an author-backed role, embodying Mamta’s delicate balance of vulnerability and calculated cunning. Her performance keeps the audience guessing. Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Abhishek with the perfect blend of charm and unpredictability. His confrontations with Mamta emerge as the film’s most engaging sequences. Among the supporting cast, Chhaya Kadam stands out as Radha Rani, the drunken yet fiercely loyal mother-in-law, adding depth to what could have been mere comic relief.

The plot is engaging, and the side characters are interesting, but then Mamata barges into every frame with exaggerated expressions and forced plot twists that are more cringe than captivating. I am not sure how much the audience would agree, but for the first time, you have an actor whose pain and poverty don't move you. You'd rather enjoy Chhaya's irrelevant authenticity over Divya's fake Hinglish accent. The worst part? You're paying for this absurdity, and you can't fast forward to the next scene. Mamata's constant flip-flop between hero and anti-hero is neither daring nor entertaining. There are moments when you actually find yourself rooting for the villain because at least hes believable.
