Synopsis

Drishyam 3

Five years after the events of Drishyam 2, Georgekutty’s life appears stable. He has adapted the story of his past into a successful film and continues to live with his family while attempting to move forward. However, journalists Yami and Rony begin investigating possible real-life inspirations behind the film, particularly the circumstances surrounding Varun’s death. Georgekutty denies any connection between the film and real events, despite increasing public scrutiny. Meanwhile, Georgekutty encounters Jose and Mary, who seek his forgiveness for past wrongdoing. He assures them that Jose’s actions were not wrong and provides financial assistance to help them restart their lives. Jose also becomes a trusted friend and confidant of Georgekutty. At home, Georgekutty and Rani search for a suitable marriage proposal for their daughter Anju through the marriage broker Mathayi. However, each promising alliance is repeatedly disrupted by anonymous interference. Georgekutty later traces the calls with assistance from retired police officer Suresh Babu and identifies the callers as Rajan and his wife Shanthi. Rajan, previously suspended for assisting Georgekutty, had suffered severe personal and financial consequences, including his daughter’s educational disruption and a suicide attempt that left her unable to speak. Feeling abandoned after Georgekutty failed to recognize his situation, Rajan develops resentment toward him.

That said, Drishyam 3 is not a bad film. It goes for the low-hanging fruit and relies on one certainty: Mohanlal's Georgekutty will always be one step ahead of the cops. And Mohanlal's brilliant performance, despite the script's shortcomings, keeps us glued to the screen for two hours and 39 minutes. His wife, played by Meena, and daughters, played by Ansiba Hassan and Esther Anil, get roles that require them to simply agree with what Georgekutty says. Esther Anil has several dialogues that bring in some welcome comic relief.

So what makes Drishyam a franchise people love to keep revisiting? The family drama and emotional layers are crucial, but it thrives largely in the clever twists and the high it elicits. Drishyam 3 lacks sorely on that note, with very few moments that would make people go, 'Wow, how on Earth did Georgekutty have that covered?' You can't blame the viewer because that's how the franchise and its numerous iterations have trained its audience for all these years. But to be fair, Jeethu deserves a huge pat on his back for bravely opting for a profound ending, sticking true to Georgekutty’s beautifully evolving arc. Only that the real problem lies in how it is arrived at. Cons of reverse engineering, perhaps.
