Synopsis

Dhoom Dhaam

Veer Poddar, who by nature is a soft-spoken, timid, shy veterinarian, visits along with his parents, his potential future life-partner, Koyal Chadda, who, by nature, is a bold, rough, tough, outgoing girl for an 'arranged marriage' discussion evening. In the meeting, the parents of the boy and the girl lie to one another, saying diametrically opposite things about Veer and Koyal, much to their discomfiture, and get the marriage arranged. Veer goes to a shopping mall and buys a lot of gifts for his bride. In the mall, Koyal's uncle, Kushwant Kapoor, collides with Veer accidentally, has some small talk, and leaves. Veer then leaves the mall with many large shopping bags filled with gifts, flowers, etc., which he delivers to Koyal's house. As soon as the bags are placed on the floor, Koyal's dog knocks them over and starts eating some spilled things from the bags, such as the lilies. Startled, Veer smiles politely and leaves. The wedding has just been completed. Veer and Koyal are seated on the bed in a hotel room, about to start their Suhaag Raat. Koyal gets a call from her family saying that their family dog has not had a bowel movement in two days, and whether she can get any medicines prescribed by her Veterinarian husband. Koyal gets annoyed and says she cannot ask her husband about that right now and ends the call. A bit later, they are interrupted by the doorbell. Two men barge in, grab Veer, and demand 'Where is Charlie? '.

Dhoom Dhaam, directed by Rishab Seth, begins on a good note. Yami’s transformation from the demure girl to the car racer who can shower abuse at the drop of a hat definitely adds some fun. But it wears off after a point. What’s jarring is a monologue she launches into, in the middle of being chased, about how women have to suffer in a patriarchal world. As a standalone piece, it’s done well, but it has no place in this screenplay. Why would someone do that when their life is in danger and time is running out? We get it- the adrenaline rush- but please don’t do things for the heck of it! Same goes for Pratik’s character. Him suffering from phobias is supposed to be funny here, and it initially is. But the makers stretch it until the climax, and you couldn’t care less.

Dhoom Dhaam’s strength lies in its racy treatment, which keeps the audience engaged despite a relatively thin storyline. Rishab Seth’s direction shines through in the film’s visual appeal, with excellent transitions and well-choreographed chase sequences that add a dynamic energy to the goings-on. The razor-sharp editing deserves special mention, ensuring the movie remains crisp and avoids feeling dragged out. The chemistry between Yami Gautam Dhar and Pratik Gandhi is undeniably one of the film’s highlights. Their playful banter and mutual support make them a couple worth rooting for. The film’s ability to deliver a thrilling yet lighthearted experience, coupled with its high production values, makes it a delightful popcorn entertainer that doesn’t demand overthinking.

Effort has been made in creating a distinctly mismatched pair. She floors it; he is sedate. She is foul-mouthed, letting loose a string of ‘gaalis’ with aplomb; he is afflicted by multiple phobias. She also gets to deliver a monologue (anyone else thinking America Ferrara in ‘Barbie’?) about the shackles of patriarchy and why women need to lie in order to break free, which basically puts the spirited Dhar firmly in the driving seat, with the meek Gandhi playing catch-up, with her being referenced even in his few break-out moments.
