Synopsis

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

Within a mansion in Bhawanigarh, Rajasthan, in 2004, powerful sorcerers and priests perform sacred rituals, and supernatural events begin occurring throughout the palace due to a malevolent spirit named Manjulika, who is determined to attack the family's daughter-in-law, Anjulika. A sorcerer intervenes and forces the spirit into a chamber, sealing it inside with a powerful trishul and sacred amulets placed on the door. Afterwards, the family abandons the mansion for safety. Eighteen years later, in Himachal Pradesh, travel vlogger and influencer Ruhaan Randhawa meets medical college student Reet Thakur, who is travelling to Bhawanigarh via Chandigarh to reluctantly marry her fiancé, Sagar. They board a bus to Chandigarh but cut short their journey to attend a music carnival Reet agrees to be in at Ruhaan's suggestion, later discovering that the bus on which they were supposed to travel had met with an accident, killing everyone on board. Subsequently, the Thakurs, owners of the mansion abandoned 18 years earlier, presume Reet, the elder daughter of the family, to be dead. Reet attempts to contact her family, but overhears a conversation between her younger sister Trisha and Sagar over the phone, realizing that they are having an affair. Hoping to spare them from a loveless marriage and avoid marrying Sagar herself, Reet goes along with her family's assumption of her death and travels to Bhawanigarh with a hesitant Ruhaan.

A director is only enabled further by a team of good writers, in this case being Aakash Kaushik, who has penned the story and screenplay. While the story does have its minor flaws, especially in the climax which seemed a bit dragged, but overall Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 manages to hold your attention. Dialogues written by Farhad Samji and Aakash Kaushik land well, while DOP Manu Anand’s lens captures the right emotions. Another most important element in a horror-comedy is the background music, and Sandeep Shirodkar does a great job at that. Ofcourse, background music from the original comes handy at many junctures, which gives the film a nostalgic value. Editor Bunty Nagi has given a smooth flow to the film, while art director Ajay Verekar and production designer Rajat Poddar help elevate the genre requirements of the film. Mukesh Chhabra’s casting is bang on.

BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 begins on a rocking note. The entry of Ruhaan and Reet is entertaining. The manner in which Reet decides to fake her death is a bit unconvincing but works well. Ruhaan’s first meeting with Reet’s family is quite memorable. How Ruhaan turns into Rooh Baba is hilarious. The flashback story of Manjulika is shown in the first half which is surprising. Usually, such a track is given prominence in the second half. The suspense at the interval point and flashback is terrific. Post interval, the film slows down and picks up when the Pandit (Sanjay Mishra) gets slapped by Manjulika. The finale has another unpredictable twist.

Convinced that Ruhaan is faking it, the trio engages in a series of contortions to expose him, some of which are not as funny as anticipated and only serve to stretch the running length. For the most part, director Anees Bazmee and writer Aakash Kaushik ably ladle out a familiar mix of mild scares and broad buffoonery, which is topped by a twist. Led by an aptly cast Kartik Aaryan as a cocky showboater, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 moves along on its hero’s insouciance, Tabu’s screen presence, and patches of entertaining comedy. The portly Potlu, played by child actor Samarth Chauhan, is the most spirited member of the extended cast.
